Be Strong and Courageous

Be Strong and Courageous

The Verse (Joshua 1:9, NKJV)

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Have you ever stood at the edge of something new and felt your courage quietly pack its bags and disappear? A new job. A difficult decision. A major life change. A bad doctor's report. An uncertain future. Moments like these can make even the bravest heart wobble a little. When we step into unfamiliar territory, it’s natural for doubts to whisper questions like: What if I’m not ready? What if I fail? What if things don’t work out the way I hoped?

Joshua knew exactly what that felt like. He had just stepped into leadership after Moses — one of the most respected and influential leaders in Israel’s history. Moses had led the people through dramatic events, miraculous deliverance and decades of wilderness travel. Now Joshua was responsible for leading the nation into the Promised Land.

That’s a heavy assignment for anyone! God knew the magnitude of the task ahead, and He didn’t leave Joshua guessing how to face it. Instead of offering a complicated strategy or a lengthy leadership manual, God gave him something both simple and profound: a reminder of His presence.

“Be strong and courageous.” Interestingly, God repeats this phrase several times in the opening chapter of Joshua. That repetition reveals something important: courage is not a one-time decision. It is something that must be remembered and renewed repeatedly as we face different situations.

But notice something crucial about the command. God does not tell Joshua to be strong because Joshua is naturally fearless or exceptionally capable. The command is rooted in something far greater — God’s presence. “For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” That changes the entire perspective.

Courage in the biblical sense does not mean the absence of fear. Even strong and capable people experience moments of uncertainty. Courage simply means choosing to move forward despite fear because you trust the One who walks beside you.

In many ways, fear grows when we believe we are facing something alone. Problems seem larger when we feel unsupported. Decisions feel heavier when we think the responsibility rests entirely on our shoulders.

But God’s promise removes that burden. He doesn’t promise that life will always be simple or predictable. Joshua would still face battles, difficult decisions and moments that tested his leadership. Yet God assured him that no matter where the journey led, he would not walk it alone.

The same promise still applies today. Every person eventually encounters seasons that require courage — stepping into new opportunities, navigating unexpected challenges or trusting God with situations that feel uncertain.

And in those moments, this verse becomes a powerful reminder. Wherever life takes you, God’s presence goes with you. Not occasionally. Not only during easy seasons. Wherever you go.

When you begin to realise that you are not navigating life using only your own strength, fear loses much of its grip. You may still feel nervous or hesitant, but courage grows as you remember who walks beside you.

God’s promise isn’t simply that He will send help when needed. It’s that He goes with you personally.

Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for the reassuring promise that Your presence goes with me wherever I go. When I face situations that feel uncertain or intimidating, remind me that I am not relying on my own strength alone.

Help me walk forward with courage, knowing that You are guiding my steps and strengthening my heart. When fear tries to take hold of my thoughts, replace it with confidence in Your faithfulness.

Give me wisdom when I must make difficult decisions, perseverance when challenges arise and peace when the path ahead seems unclear. Help me remember that courage grows when I focus on Your presence rather than my circumstances.

Teach me to trust that wherever You lead, You will also provide the strength and guidance needed to follow.

Amen.
