The Verse (Lamentations 3:22–23, NKJV)
Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
Have you ever woken up wishing you could press a reset button on yesterday? Perhaps something didn’t go as planned. Maybe you said something you regret, made a poor decision or simply felt overwhelmed by life’s demands. We all have days like that — days when things feel messy, heavy or uncertain.
Yet these verses offer one of the most comforting truths found in Scripture: God’s compassion never runs out.
What makes this even more powerful is the setting in which these words were written. The book of Lamentations was written during a time of deep national sorrow and devastation. The writer was surrounded by loss, hardship and disappointment. Yet in the middle of that darkness, he recognised something extraordinary — God’s mercy was still present. Even when circumstances were painful, God had not abandoned His people.
The verse begins with a remarkable statement: “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed.” In other words, it is God’s compassion that sustains us. His mercy holds us together when life feels like it might fall apart.
Then comes the beautiful promise: “His compassions fail not.” Human patience often runs thin. People grow tired, frustrated or discouraged, but God’s compassion is not limited in the same way. It does not fade after repeated mistakes or difficult seasons. His mercy is steady, dependable and endlessly renewed.
That’s why the next line feels so hopeful: “They are new every morning.” Every sunrise quietly announces that God’s grace is available again today. Yesterday’s failures do not cancel today’s mercy. Last week’s worries do not block today’s grace. Even seasons of discouragement cannot exhaust God’s compassion.
Think about the reliability of a sunrise. No matter how dark the night was, morning arrives without fail. The sky slowly brightens, the light returns and a new day begins.
God’s mercy works the same way. Each morning carries fresh grace, renewed strength and another opportunity to move forward. Instead of living under the weight of yesterday’s burdens, we can begin the day with hope because God’s faithfulness continues.
The final line in the passage captures this beautifully: “Great is Your faithfulness.” God’s faithfulness is not based on our performance. It flows from His character. He remains compassionate, patient and loving day after day, season after season.
So when a new morning arrives, it carries more than sunlight — it carries the promise that God’s mercy is ready to meet us again.
Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for the compassion You show me each day. Your mercy never runs dry and Your kindness never grows weary. Even when I stumble or feel discouraged, You continue to meet me with patience and grace.
Help me begin each morning with a grateful heart. Remind me that yesterday does not define today, because Your mercy is always new. Give me strength to move forward with hope, trusting in Your faithful care.
Teach me to reflect that same compassion toward others, offering kindness and patience just as You have shown to me. Thank You for Your unfailing love and for the fresh mercies that greet me with every sunrise.
Amen.
