The Verse (Psalm 23:6, NKJV)
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
When you look back over your life, what do you see? Perhaps you remember mountaintop moments filled with joy, answered prayers and unexpected blessings. Or maybe your mind drifts to seasons of loss, uncertainty, disappointment and questions that never seemed to have easy answers.
Most lives are a mixture of both. Yet, if we pause long enough to look beyond the circumstances, we often discover something remarkable: God was present through every chapter.
David understood this well. After describing the Lord as his Shepherd — the One who leads, provides, restores and protects — he ends Psalm 23 with one of the most reassuring promises in Scripture: "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life."
Not just the easy days. All the days. The joyful days and the painful ones. The seasons of abundance and the seasons of waiting. The days when faith came easily and the days when simply taking the next step required courage.
God's goodness is not limited by our circumstances. It remains constant because it flows from His unchanging character.
Sometimes we expect God's goodness to look like an easy life, but often it looks very different. Sometimes His goodness is the strength to keep going when we feel weak. Sometimes it is peace that settles our anxious hearts before the answer arrives. Sometimes it is an open door we never expected — or a closed door that protects us from what we could not yet see.
Looking back, many of us can recognise moments when God quietly carried us through fires we never thought we would survive. He provided exactly what we needed, even if it wasn't what we originally asked for. He surrounded us with people at just the right time. He comforted us in grief, strengthened us in weakness and remained faithful even when our own faith felt fragile.
Like a loving Shepherd, He never stopped walking beside us. Perhaps that is why gratitude is one of the most powerful forms of worship. Gratitude trains our hearts to recognise God's fingerprints across our lives. It reminds us that we have never truly walked alone.
Even today, His goodness is still pursuing you. Not because you have earned it. Not because you have lived perfectly. But because that is who He is.
He is a faithful Father, a constant Friend, a gentle Shepherd and an unshakable Anchor through every storm. His love never grows weary. His mercy never runs dry. His promises never expire.
If you find yourself in a difficult season today, remember this: the chapter you are living is not the whole story. The same God who has faithfully led you through every yesterday is already preparing grace for your tomorrow.
So take a moment to breathe. Look back with gratitude. Look ahead with hope. And walk forward with confidence, knowing that His goodness is still pursuing you with relentless love every step of the way.
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your unfailing goodness and faithfulness throughout every season of my life. Looking back, I can see Your hand guiding, protecting, providing and carrying me in ways I didn't always recognise at the time.
Thank You for being my Shepherd, my Provider, my Friend and my constant source of hope. Even when life has been difficult, You have never left my side. Your mercy has been new every morning and Your love has remained steadfast through every joy and every trial.
Help me to trust You when I cannot see the road ahead. Teach me to recognise Your goodness in both the extraordinary moments and the ordinary ones. Fill my heart with gratitude instead of fear and with confidence instead of worry.
May my life become a testimony of Your faithfulness, and may every breath I take bring honour and praise to Your name. Help me to follow wherever You lead, knowing that Your goodness and mercy will never stop pursuing me. Thank You for never giving up on me and for loving me more faithfully than I could ever imagine.
Amen.
