Mountains Moved

Mountains Moved

The Verse (Matthew 17:20, NKJV)

So Jesus said to them, ‘Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.’

Ever felt like your life has turned into a mountain range? Not the scenic, postcard-worthy kind — more the “How on earth am I supposed to climb this?” variety. Problems pile up, responsibilities feel heavy and the path forward looks steep and uncertain.

That image of a mountain is exactly why Jesus used it when teaching about faith. Mountains represent the things in life that feel immovable — long-standing struggles, unexpected setbacks or challenges that seem far bigger than our strength.

Yet Jesus does something surprising here. He does not say we need enormous faith. He does not talk about heroic or dramatic faith. Instead, He points to something incredibly small: a mustard seed.

A mustard seed is tiny — so small it could easily slip through your fingers unnoticed. Yet when planted, it grows into a surprisingly strong plant. The message is simple but powerful: faith does not need to start big to become significant.

Many people believe faith has to feel confident, bold and unwavering before it counts, but the truth is that faith often begins quietly. Sometimes it starts in the middle of uncertainty, when answers are unclear and courage feels thin.

Mustard-seed faith might look like praying when you are tired and unsure what to say. It might be choosing hope even when fear keeps whispering worst-case scenarios. Sometimes it is simply taking one step forward when you would rather stay still. In other words, faith grows through action, not perfection.

Mountains do not always move instantly. Sometimes they shift slowly over time. Sometimes the obstacle itself changes shape, and sometimes the greatest movement happens within us first — fear softens, courage grows and perspective changes. What once looked impossible begins to look manageable when we realise we are not facing it alone.

The real strength of faith is not measured by its size but by where it is placed. Even small faith becomes powerful when it rests in a faithful God. A tiny seed planted in good soil has the potential to grow far beyond what its size suggests. That is the quiet beauty of this teaching: you do not need extraordinary faith to begin. You only need willing faith.

If your faith feels small today, that does not disqualify you. In many ways, it places you right at the starting line of something meaningful. Small faith still grows. Small faith still trusts and small faith, placed in God’s hands, can begin to move mountains!

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that faith does not have to be large or impressive for You to use it. Even the smallest seed of trust matters to You. When the mountains in my life feel overwhelming, remind me that You are greater than every obstacle I face.

Help me to trust You in the ordinary moments — when answers are unclear and when progress feels slow. Give me the courage to take small steps of faith, even when I cannot see the entire path ahead.

Strengthen my heart when doubt tries to grow louder than hope. Teach me to keep planting seeds of faith through prayer, patience and perseverance. And as I place my trust in You, begin to move the mountains that seem impossible.

I offer You my mustard-seed faith today.

Amen.
