The Verse (Nahum 1:7, NKJV)
The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.
Where do you run when life suddenly becomes difficult?
Everyone faces moments when plans unravel, unexpected problems appear or the future feels uncertain. During those times, our instinct is often to search for something stable — something strong enough to hold us steady when everything else feels shaky. This verse offers a simple yet powerful reminder: the Lord is both good and strong.
First, it tells us that the Lord is good. This may seem like a small statement, but it carries enormous meaning. God’s goodness means His character is trustworthy. He is not distant, indifferent or unpredictable. His intentions toward His people are kind, compassionate and faithful. Even when circumstances feel confusing, God’s nature does not change. His goodness is constant.
The verse then describes God as a stronghold in the day of trouble. A stronghold in ancient times was a fortified place of protection — high walls, solid stone and a position that enemies could not easily reach. When danger approached, people ran to the stronghold because it offered safety and security.
In the same way, God becomes a refuge for those who trust Him. He is a place where fear can settle, where courage can grow and where hearts can find stability in the middle of uncertainty.
Notice that the verse says “in the day of trouble.” It doesn’t pretend that difficulties never come. Trouble is part of the human experience. Yet the promise here is not the absence of problems — it is the presence of protection. God meets His people right in the middle of life’s challenges.
The final line of the verse adds something deeply personal: “He knows those who trust in Him.” This isn’t simply intellectual awareness. It speaks of relationship. God recognises, cares for and watches over those who place their trust in Him. Their faith does not go unnoticed.
Imagine the comfort of knowing that the Creator of the universe sees you, understands your situation and welcomes you into His protection. Trust transforms how we face life. Instead of feeling alone in difficulty, we begin to see God as our shelter. Instead of relying only on our own strength, we rest in His.
And when we learn to run toward Him rather than away from Him, we discover something remarkable: The place of refuge we were searching for was always there.
Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for reminding me that You are both good and strong. When trouble appears and uncertainty grows, help me remember that You are my safe place. Teach me to run toward You rather than rely only on my own strength.
Fill my heart with confidence in Your goodness and calm my fears with the knowledge that You are watching over me. Help me trust You more deeply each day and rest in the protection You provide.
Thank You for knowing me, caring for me and being a stronghold I can always depend on.
Amen.
